ICMP utamanya   digunakan oleh sistem operasi komputer jaringan untuk mengirim pesan kesalahan yang menyatakan, sebagai contoh, bahwa komputer tujuan tidak bisa dijangkau. Fungsi dan Kegunaannya : Membantu proses error handling / melaporkan apabila terjadi error pada sebuah jaingan.  Error merupakan salah satu gejala yang paling mungkin terjadi di dalam sebuah jaringan komputer.
